Fear of Heights

Scared of heights? BridgeClimb has helped thousands of Climbers overcome their fear of heights, also known as Acrophobia. The Climb is completely safe as you will be supported all the way to the top. When you reach the summit and see the city set out below, you’ll have an amazing sense of accomplishment that you’ve never felt before.

Nothing can match that feeling of personal achievement you will gain when you overcome your fear of heights as you climb 134m into the sky on top of the world’s largest steel-arch Bridge.

Complete Support

Notify your Climb Leader if you suffer from Acrophobia. All our Climb Leaders are specifically trained to care for Climbers with a fear of heights.

Climbers begin with a thorough orientation session, including a Climb simulator where you can get a feel for the conditions on the Bridge. You will be issued with safety gear including a high-performance safety harness and communications equipment.

For the duration of the Climb, you will be attached to a static line on the Bridge, ensuring you feel safe, secure and comfortable at all times.

During the Climb, participants walk along flat, inclined mesh catwalks; Climb up and down four flights of stairs; Climb 465 widely spaced steps on the arches; and step over, duck under and squeeze through girders.

There are hand rails along the route providing support all the way to the top. You may be placed at the front of your group for extra encouragement to overcome your fear of heights.

Did you know?
Acrophobia, or fear of heights, is believed to affect 5% of people. Vertigo, a symptom of acrophobia, is a type of dizziness characterised by a sensation of spinning.

One Acrophobic’s Story

I am petrified of heights, even to the point that when crossing a bridge or travelling along a cliff edge, I move to the furthest point from the edge.

Graham Jenner ( Brisbane, Australia)

In April 2003, Graham Jenner, 62, had the exhilarating experience of overcoming his fear of heights as he climbed his way to the summit of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Graham had no fear of heights when he was younger, but his fear developed as he grew older to the point where it was impacting his daily life. Determined to overcome his growing fear of heights, he made a resolution to take on the challenge of a BridgeClimb. Graham booked online and within minutes he was confirmed to Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge at 8.35am on 24 April 2003.

Supported by our trained Climb Leaders, Graham and his family began their BridgeClimb experience with our Climb preparation program at Climb Base. Graham was able to experience the climbing conditions on the Bridge, including walking along a replica catwalk and steps.

Once kitted out with his safety equipment and securely attached to the Bridge with his harness and static line, Graham made the ascent. At the summit he was rewarded for conquering his fear of heights with incredible views that cannot be experienced in any other way.

What a wonderful time I had. At no time did I even feel any signs of my fear of heights and enjoyed the experience immensely. All your staff were so friendly and helpful before, during and after the Climb … I wish to congratulate you on a splendid tourist attraction suitable for most people.

Graham Jenner ( Brisbane, Australia)

At the end of his fantastic achievement, Graham purchased his BridgeClimb photos on CD to prove to his family and friends that he did in fact overcome his fear of heights. ‘And I will do it again one day!’ he said.
